Shell executive offers advice on managing a global business lifestyle during the Latin American Residency

Maarten van Hasselt, General Director of Shell Global Solution’s Latin American and Caribbean Operations, spoke to the OneMBA Class of 2006 during their global residency in Latin America. Van Hasselt offered advice, drawn from his experiences, on what it takes to be a successful global executive. He cautioned executives, “There is no shallow end” when pursuing an international career. He also emphasized the importance of recognizing cultural differences and how these differences impact business, asserting that this realization was the most important skill for global executives to possess. He provided tips on how to effectively manage virtual teams as well as work/life balance, given that a global executive’s workday never ends.

His interactive session was an appropriate end to the Latin American Residency, which started in Monterrey, Mexico on November 13, 2005 and concluded 7 days later in São Paulo, Brazil.
